I have to take a quick minute here to jot down a couple of things that Carter's said/done in the last few days that are so.....well......CARTER!
Saturday we were driving home from picking up pizza and rain clouds were rolling in. Carter loves to watch the weather. He is looking out the window marveling at the big billowy clouds. He laughs this huge belly laugh which all by itself says, "wow!" I asked, "what do you see buddy?" He points up to the sky pointing and say, "that cloud is SOOOO huge that I think Jesus AND God live there---together." I look back in my rear view mirror, he is staring up looking all angelic covered in sawdust and dirt with wonder in his eyes and a smile of contentment on his face.
Today during our grocery shopping excursion or shall I call these sorts of outings adventures? (Scott calls them down right crazy! He can't fathom why I would take all 3 kids to the store and try to accomplish a goal--at least he appreciates what I do..it's getting better...kind of?!!)
Anyway we are checking out and it has been a pretty uneventful trip, thankfully, however Carter and Christian are tired and in need of naps. I am rubbing Carter's head commending him for a basically well behaved shopping trip. His eyes become fixed on my chest and he says, like the true man that he is, "mom what Boppy are you wearing?" I lean closer to him as I am not understanding the questions and he proceeds to pull my shirt down to expose my left breast! I get a little frazzled as my 3 year old has exposed me to the entire, seemingly VERY busy all of a sudden, check out area! "What????" I ask with a crazy look on my face. He calmly and matter of factly replies, "yeah, mom, good choice I weally like that Boppy you got on today". So I can only imagine that his word Boppy means bra??? So he associates the Boppy pillow I used to nurse all three kids with my boobs which in turn must mean I wear a Boppy over the boobs...right?? Is that 3 year old logic or what?? I write this only so that I remember it someday when I reread these lovely entries. I tell you this kid keeps me hopping ALL. THE. LIVE. LONG. DAY!

TO Scott
And this....
Christian has entered a new stage these last few weeks. The Don't-leave-me-alone-for-a-second-I-might-do-something-extremely-dangerous-STAGE. I was setting the table for dinner (and by the way, we NEVER have chips for dinner, except this night) and was busy tending to something in the kitchen when I turned around to find this scene. He has been into doing more stuff like this lately so I had to take a few pictures so I remember what a monkey he was at 15 months. I was glad to see that he was only thinking of hanging from the light fixture, but then wisely decided to just smoosh the bag of chips instead. WHEW!

The obvious better choice of smashing chips....heaven's knows he wouldn't eat those things! :0)
All his monkeying around has me scurrying after him to make sure he is engaged in something "safe". Although things change quickly! He was sweetly sitting at the bottom of our big bookcase in the living room and I went to clean the kitchen (which is a never ending battle) and turned to find him scaling the shelves like a rock wall. Sheeze! Never a dull moment at our house.

Hmmmm......
As I am sitting here uploading my pictures, I here this little conversation take place out on the back deck: Lots of giggling, squealing and general merriment. Then it falls quiet.
Carter: "ohhh noooo" Very serious
Ella: "Oh man, that is NOT good, buddy."
I turn to look at them, they are completely naked and staring straight up into the sky. I know why they are naked. I had just scolded them because their new "fun" is to spray each other to the point of drenching with the hose....completely clothed. After the third time in the last two days, I handed them both towels and told them they were responsible to dry off, hang up their clothes and then pick out dry clothes and get dressed...by.them.selves.! Sigh!!!!!!!!!!
So how is it again that I have two naked children staring up into the clear blue sky??????????
Carter has flung his underwear so far up into the sky that they landed on TOP of the roof. He came in to inform me of the situation telling me, "mom.....ummmm.....I got some bad news....my underwear are on the top of the house. ummmm.(questioning look waiting for me to loose it or laugh???) I just shrug my shoulders and say, "oh bummer" He sadly walks away head down, and mumbles, " they are my weally dood ones tooo...the one with the soccer balls on it. sighhh" Ella makes a suggestion that Dad can fix it when he gets home using the ladder. As far as Carter is concerned..it's ALL good! 15 minutes later and they are STILL naked. Must go facilitate the next steps of logical consequences. :)

Pictures from the weekend
Galavanting around
There are so many things I enjoy about the summer. I LOVE that I have the summer off to enjoy with my kids, take time off from teaching so I am fresh for the fall, soak up all the wonderful sights and experiences Michigan has to offer, meet casually with friends (on a whim), and the flexibility to do as we please...every so often! Life is good! I am feeling extra blessed this summer. healthy, happy (for the most part) kids, lovely weather, more sleep filled nights than not, fun times at the lake, great memories made with family and friends, an occasional campfire, oh and that most loved-most wonderful glass of wine!
As many know, I am in the midst of working on my thesis. At the beginning of the summer, I had the worst attitude about it. I saw it as the obstacle that came in between my time with my kids and my free time at night. However, as I am in the downward slope of writing it, I see how much it is stretching me and helping me to grow professionally. I notice now too that I am more present with the kids. It is helping me focus. I'm not reading anything outside of academic literature ok.....so I took my InStyle magazine to Indy this weekend and got a bit carsick in my attempt to enjoy it. Oh well! I'm not as good about keeping my blog updated with all the great stuff the kids are saying and doing. But this is the balance I have struck for this phase in life. Things I am doing:
Seizing the day (this morning we did an art project, read three books, went on a 1.5 mile walk/bike ride, had snack, and had quiet time all by 10:45)
Going to the library
Playing outside
Maintaining our little container garden (so sweet)
Getting plenty of exercise
Having lots of adventures on the lake
Going to the zoo
Attempting to figure out Facebook
WRiting my thesis
Training to run a 1/2 marathon in October
Sometimes I wonder how I have time to work during the school year??
The kids are all at such fun stages right now. Ella is obsessed with her American Girl Doll, Ainsley. She is reading very well, and very interested in learning to draw animals. Carter is hilarious in all he does. He is such an outdoorsman and honestly we should have given him the middle name of "Water". He is attracted to it like a magnetic force. A few weeks ago we had spent a couple of days at my parent's lake, we had bathed the kids, had dinner, and were dressed in pjs for the ride home. Ella had conned everyone into a "bedtime boatride". Upon docking the boat and heading to the van. Carter (fully dressed in jammies and pullup) couldn't resist jumping off the dock into the lake for one last swim! Geeze! Christian is growing and changing so much with all he is learning and saying. He still calls me Daddy! Which I can't understand but I am accepting this name...as it could be much worse.
Many might wonder...where are all my pictures???? Well, it's not that I'm not snapping away, it's just that I haven't taken the time to install the photo software on our new laptop. Last week, Scott almost had to come home to whisk me to the hospital with a heart attack. I was reading email and everything went black. YIKES! Our computer ....died.....and I foolishly hadn't backed up my thesis. Yup, can you say PANIC????Well to make a long story short, Scott in all his technological wisdom retrieved our hard drive and reinstalled everything to our new laptop. WHEW! I just haven't had the time to work on the pics or blog.
In a nutshell, the 4th of July was so fun. The kids were mesmerized by the magic of the fireworks. We've enjoyed a day at the beautiful beach on Lake Michigan, and we just returned from a fun filled weekend in Indianapolis to celebrate our nieces First Birthday! Oh, my word, she is so cute. She and Christian are only 3 months apart and they are so fun. Ella adores the fact that she is the big cousin and constantly wanted to take care of her. We were so lucky to be there while she was just learning to take her first steps. It is so amazing to see that process develop. We even managed to spend Friday at the spectacular Indianapolis Zoo. It was a hot, humid day but the animals were amazing! I am looking forward to posting pictures soon. I should go make some lunch for the kiddos. Christian is sleeping off our busy morning and should be awake SOON.
